Jaw Pain in Bellingham

Many experience jaw pain from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which affect roughly 10 million Americans.

Other causes include motor vehicle accident injury, hitting the ground while playing sports, and arthritis.

These types of trauma will also create some misalignment in the mandible. Inflammation is also at the heart of jaw pain.

Our Approach

Cold Laser Therapy

One of the primary ways we address mandible pain at Noble Chiropractic is with cold laser therapy, which reduces discomfort and inflammation, and accelerates healing.

Chiropractic Care

While most people equate chiropractic care as a treatment for back and neck pain, this form of natural care can effectively address jaw pain.

Dr. Noble adjusts the C1-C2 and occiput (the base of the skull) using gentle Torque Release Technique (TRT). The adjustments create better alignment. He can also adjust the jaw joint to help it move more easily and alleviate muscle tension.

Gum Chewing

While it may seem counterintuitive, Dr. Noble also recommends chewing a hard piece of gum daily to strengthen the jaw muscles. To start, you may just chew a piece of gum for five or 10 minutes the first day, and then build up to an hour, just like you would start with an exercise to help a hurt knee, for example.

The Importance of Stress Reduction

If you grind your teeth in your sleep, that’s a symptom of tight mandible muscles. Many people experience bruxism due to stress; when they’re stressed, they’re putting more cortisol into the body, which creates more inflammation. When the muscles get inflamed, that creates more tightness.

To reduce stress in your life that could create jaw tension, consider meditation techniques to help loosen and relax your jaw. Yoga practices can also ease your muscles, and being out in nature can help calm your mind and relax your face.
